FTP Clients, WordPress Themes and Plugins

Of course you probably want to give your site a more distinct look and feel. That’s easy as well. Just head over here and download a theme that you like, unzip it and upload it in your wp-content/themes/ folder.

How do you upload it?

You have to use an FTP client for that. I recommend you use the free ftp client FileZilla. Just download and install it.

1. Put the ip address Hostgator or your webhost gave you in the address field and the username and password you used to access your cpanel in the other fields. Leave the port field empty and click on connect. Sorry my Filezilla runs in German but you get the idea.

2. Now you are connected to your web space. On the right side is your web space and on the left are the files on your computer. Now you can drag and drop files from your computer to your web space and the FTP client uploads them.

3. Double click on the public_html folder

4. Select the folder you used when you added the domain to cpanel.

5. Continue to the wp-content folder in which you find the plugins and themes folder. Just drag and drop the theme folders from your computer to the wp-content/themes/ folder. The same applies to plugins, they just go in the plugin folder.

As soon as your name server has propagated you can activate themes in your administration area (http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/) under the menu point “presentation” and plugins under “plugins”.

Plugins are little programs that extend the functionality of WordPress. There are thousands out there and this makes WordPress such a nice system for a website. With the right plugins you can add sound files, media players or connect WordPress to a hosted photo gallery on sites like Flickr.com.

We just need one WordPress plugin to make money and that is the AdSense Deluxe Plugin that you can use for AdSense and other affiliate links. Head over here, download it and throw the adsense-deluxe.php file in your plugin folder.
